About

Welcome to Experienced Speech Therapy based in Cochrane, Alberta

I’m a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist based in Cochrane, Alberta, and I’m passionate about making quality speech therapy accessible to families, no matter where you live.

Through virtual therapy, I’ve been able to work with children across Alberta and Ontario for over five years. Whether you’re in Calgary, a small town in Northern Ontario, or anywhere in between, your child can access the same professional, evidence-based care that families across Canada trust.

I specialize in working with children of all ages who need support with speech sounds, language development, fluency, or other communication challenges. And because all of my sessions are virtual, there’s no waitlist for families outside major cities, no long drives, and no missing school or work for appointments.

What Makes My Therapy Services Unique?

  • I’m based in Cochrane, Alberta with virtual services across both provinces
  • Licensed in both Alberta and Ontario, so I can legally provide therapy in both provinces
  • Virtual therapy is my specialty – I’ve been doing this for over 5 years and have worked with hundreds of families online
  • Flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends to fit your family’s life
  • No geographic barriers – If you have internet access in Alberta or Ontario, I can help your child
  • Family-centered approach – I work closely with parents to make sure skills carry over into daily life

A Note About Virtual Therapy

If you’re in a rural area or smaller community without local speech therapy services, you’ve probably felt frustrated by waitlists, long drives, or simply not having access to a pediatric SLP. That’s exactly why I love virtual therapy – it means a child in Thunder Bay has the same access to specialized care as a child in downtown Calgary.

Research shows virtual speech therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for most goals, and many families actually prefer it because their child is more comfortable at home, parents can easily observe and learn, and there’s no travel time.

Take the first step toward helping your child communicate confidently. Contact me today to schedule your consultation.

And say hello to Our Speech Language Pathologist

Stephanie Bertrand-Nicoll, M.Sc., RSLP(C)

I received my Masters in Speech Sciences from the University of British Columbia in 2012. Since then, I’ve worked as a pediatric Speech Language Pathologist in western Canada for almost 15 years. I live in Cochrane, Alberta, with my husband and three children.

Thanks to the magic of Telepractice, I can work with children across the province remotely. It’s incredible how technology has enabled me to help children in areas that might not have access to in-person services.

Overall, I am grateful to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these children and their families, all while being able to balance my personal life with my professional one. I look forward to connecting!

Virtual therapy has been my specialty for over 5 years. While I’m based here in Cochrane with my family, I’ve been able to extend my services across Alberta and into Ontario through telepractice. I’ve worked with hundreds of children online. From rural Alberta communities to Northern Ontario families, I’ve seen firsthand how effective and convenient virtual therapy can be for families who might not otherwise have access to pediatric speech services.

Services

Speech Therapy Services | Virtual Therapy Across Alberta and Ontario

Professional online speech therapy for families in Alberta and Ontario. Whether you’re in Cochrane, Sudbury, Calgary, Thunder Bay, or a rural community anywhere in between, your child can access expert care from home.

Articulation

Does your child struggle with certain speech sounds, making them hard to understand? Our virtual articulation therapy helps children improve pronunciation and speak more clearly.

Ideal for: Children with unclear speech, difficulty with sounds like ‘r’, ‘s’, ‘l’, or ‘th’

Learn More About Articulation Therapy

Is your child struggling with specific sounds like ‘r’, ‘s’, ‘l’, or ‘th’? Are teachers, grandparents, or friends having trouble understanding them? Articulation challenges are one of the most common reasons families seek speech therapy, and the good news is they respond really well to treatment.

In our virtual articulation therapy sessions, we use evidence-based techniques to systematically teach your child how to produce speech sounds correctly. Through interactive games, activities, and practice, we work on one or two target sounds at a time until they become automatic in conversation.

Virtual therapy works beautifully for articulation goals because I can see your child’s mouth movements clearly on camera, provide immediate feedback, and use engaging digital activities that keep kids motivated. Many families across Alberta and Ontario have seen dramatic improvements in their child’s speech clarity through our online sessions.

Whether you’re in Calgary, Red Deer, Kingston, or a rural area, your child can access the same quality articulation therapy that would be provided in person – all from the comfort of home.

Late Talker

Is your toddler or preschooler not saying as many words as other kids their age? Early intervention for late talkers can make a huge difference.

Ideal for: Toddlers 18 months – 3 years with limited vocabulary or delayed first words

Learn More About Late Talker Program

If your toddler isn’t meeting typical language milestones – saying first words, combining words into phrases, or building vocabulary – you’re not alone, and early support can make all the difference.

Late talkers often catch up beautifully with the right intervention. My program focuses on building your child’s vocabulary, encouraging intentional communication (even before words!), and developing the foundational language skills they’ll need for future learning and social success.

Here’s what makes this program special for families in Alberta and Ontario: because sessions are virtual, parents are right there learning alongside their child. I teach you specific strategies to use throughout your day – during meals, playtime, bath time – so your child gets language practice all day long, not just during our 30-minute session.

For families in rural Alberta or Ontario communities where local early intervention services might have long waitlists, virtual therapy means you can get started right away. We’ll work together to help your little one find their voice.

Fluency | Stuttering

Does your child repeat sounds, prolong words, or get stuck when speaking? Fluency therapy can help children who stutter speak more smoothly and confidently.

Ideal for: Children experiencing stuttering, repetitions, or anxiety about speaking

Learn More About Fluency Therapy (Stuttering)

Stuttering can be really frustrating for kids – and worrying for parents. You might notice your child repeating sounds (“b-b-ball”), prolonging sounds (“sssssnake”), or getting completely stuck on words. Sometimes kids develop anxiety around speaking because of their stuttering.

The good news is that there are proven strategies that can help. In fluency therapy, we work on techniques to manage stuttering, reduce tension, and build confidence in communication. For younger children, we often use indirect approaches that reduce pressure. For older kids, we teach specific strategies they can use when they feel stuck.

Virtual therapy actually works really well for fluency goals. Many children feel less self-conscious practicing at home in their comfortable environment, and I can still see and hear everything I need to provide effective therapy. We use interactive activities, practice in natural conversation, and build strategies your child can use in real-life situations – at school, with friends, at home.

Serving families across Alberta and Ontario, including rural communities where access to specialized fluency therapy might otherwise be limited.

Expressive Language

Does your child have trouble finding the right words, forming sentences, or expressing their ideas? We can help build the language skills they need to communicate confidently.

Ideal for: Children with limited vocabulary, difficulty forming sentences, or trouble expressing thoughts

Learn More About Expressive Language Therapy

Expressive language is all about how your child uses words to communicate their thoughts, needs, and ideas. Some kids have lots of ideas but struggle to put them into words. Others might have difficulty with grammar, sentence structure, or organizing their thoughts to tell a story.

In expressive language therapy, we work on:

  • Building vocabulary (learning new words and actually using them)
  • Improving grammar and sentence structure
  • Developing storytelling abilities
  • Learning to ask and answer questions
  • Expressing needs, wants, and feelings clearly

Every child is different, so I tailor sessions to your child’s specific needs and interests. We might work on describing pictures, retelling stories, having conversations about topics they love, or playing games that naturally encourage language use.

For families across Alberta, Northern Ontario, and rural communities, virtual therapy means your child can build these critical language skills without the barrier of distance. Parents can observe sessions and learn how to support language development throughout the day.

Receptive Language

Does your child struggle to understand spoken language or follow directions? Receptive language skills are the foundation for learning and communication.

Ideal for: Children who have difficulty following directions, understanding questions, or listening comprehension

Learn More About Receptive Language Therapy

Receptive language is your child’s ability to understand what others are saying. If your child frequently says “what?” or “huh?”, struggles to follow multi-step directions, has trouble answering questions, or doesn’t seem to understand age-appropriate vocabulary, they might need support with receptive language.

This is such an important area because receptive language is the foundation for everything else – following directions at school, understanding stories, learning new concepts, and participating in conversations.

In therapy, we work on:

  • Understanding vocabulary and concepts (colors, numbers, categories, etc.)
  • Following directions (from simple one-step to complex multi-step)
  • Answering different types of questions (who, what, where, when, why)
  • Understanding stories and making inferences
  • Processing language at age-appropriate speed

Virtual therapy works well for receptive language because we can use visual supports, interactive activities, and real-time feedback. Whether you’re in Edmonton, Peterborough, or a small town in Ontario, your child can build these essential comprehension skills from home.

Children with Disabilities

Specialized speech therapy for children with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental disabilities.

Support for Children with Disabilities

Every child deserves to communicate in a way that works for them. I provide individualized speech therapy for children with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Down Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Global Developmental Delays
  • Genetic syndromes
  • Other diagnoses affecting communication

My approach is highly personalized because I know that children with disabilities have unique strengths, challenges, and ways of learning. We might work on:

  • Functional communication (requesting, commenting, asking questions)
  • Social communication skills (turn-taking, eye contact, conversation)
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) when appropriate
  • Speech sound production
  • Understanding and using language
  • Play skills and joint attention

For families Cochrane, Alberta, Ontario, or other areas where specialized services are limited, virtual therapy can be life-changing. You don’t have to drive hours to access care from someone who understands your child’s specific needs.

I work closely with parents, and often with other therapists and teachers, to create goals that are meaningful for your child’s daily life. Together, we’ll help your child communicate in the way that works best for them.

And More

Every child is unique. If your child’s needs don’t fit neatly into one category, we’ll create a personalized plan just for them.

Ideal for: Children with unique needs, multiple areas of focus, or specific goals

Learn More About Customized Therapy Plans

Sometimes a child’s communication needs are complex or don’t fit neatly into standard categories. Maybe your child needs support in multiple areas – articulation AND language. Maybe they have unique challenges related to a rare diagnosis. Or maybe you have specific goals that require a creative, individualized approach.

That’s where I come in. I love creating customized therapy plans that fit each child’s unique profile. We’ll assess your child’s strengths and challenges, talk about your family’s priorities, and design a plan that addresses what matters most to you.

This might mean:

  • Combining work on multiple goals (speech sounds + vocabulary + social skills)
  • Adapting techniques for children with complex medical or developmental needs
  • Focusing on very specific functional goals (ordering at restaurants, talking to friends)
  • Incorporating your child’s special interests into therapy
  • Adjusting pacing and approach based on how your child learns best

Whether you’re in Cochrane, Sudbury, a rural farming community, or anywhere across Alberta and Ontario, we’ll create a plan that fits your child. Virtual therapy gives us flexibility to try different approaches, adjust as we go, and include parents as partners in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where do you provide speech therapy services?

I am licensed to provide speech therapy in both Alberta and Ontario, which means I can legally work with families across both provinces.

In Alberta:

  • In-person services available in Cochrane and surrounding areas (Calgary, Canmore, Airdrie)
  • Virtual services province-wide – whether you’re in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, or a rural community

In Ontario:

  • Virtual services throughout the province – from Thunder Bay to Windsor, Sudbury to Kingston, and everywhere in between
  • I especially love working with families in Northern Ontario and rural areas where local speech therapy services can be hard to access

Virtual therapy (telepractice) is my primary service model. Through secure video conferencing, I provide the same high-quality care you’d get in person – with the added convenience of joining from home, no travel time, and flexible scheduling.

Do you specialize in virtual speech therapy?

Yes! Virtual therapy has been my primary way of working for over 5 years, and I’ve successfully helped hundreds of children across Alberta and Ontario online.

I know it might feel strange at first if you’ve never done therapy virtually, but I promise it works. Research consistently shows that virtual speech therapy (telepractice) is just as effective as in-person therapy for most communication goals.

Why families choose virtual therapy:

  • Convenience – No driving, no parking, no waiting rooms. Sessions fit into your life.
  • Comfort – Kids are often more relaxed and engaged at home with their own toys.
  • Access – If you’re in a rural area, Northern Ontario, or anywhere without local SLPs, you can still get expert care.
  • Consistency – No cancellations for bad weather, illnesses, or transportation issues.
  • Parent involvement – You’re right there learning strategies to support your child all week long.
  • Flexibility – Evening and weekend appointments are much easier to arrange virtually.

Whether you’re in downtown Calgary or a small town in Northern Ontario, the quality of care is exactly the same. I use interactive games, engaging activities, and evidence-based techniques designed specifically for online delivery.

Is online speech therapy effective for young children?

Really effective! I wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work.

Research shows that virtual speech therapy (telepractice) is just as effective as traditional in-person therapy for most communication goals – including articulation, language development, fluency, and more.

I’ve personally worked with hundreds of children online over the past 5+ years and have seen incredible results. Kids learn speech sounds, build vocabulary, improve fluency, and develop confident communication skills – all through the screen.

In fact, many children actually do BETTER virtually because:

  • They’re more comfortable and relaxed at home
  • Parents can actively participate and learn
  • We can easily incorporate their own toys and books
  • There’s no anxiety about going to an unfamiliar office

For families in rural Alberta, Northern Ontario, or other underserved areas, virtual therapy means you don’t have to choose between “drive 2 hours each way” or “go without services.” You can access quality care right from home.

Will virtual therapy work for my shy/young child?

This is a common concern, and I totally understand!

The good news: Many shy or young children actually do BETTER with virtual therapy because:

  • They’re in their safe, comfortable home environment
  • They can have a parent right next to them
  • They can use their own familiar toys
  • There’s no scary trip to an unfamiliar office

For very young children (18 months – 3 years), I use a parent-coaching model where I teach YOU strategies to use throughout your day. This is often more effective than direct therapy at this age anyway.

For shy older kids, I take time to build rapport gradually. We start with topics they love and activities they enjoy. Most kids warm up quickly when they realize therapy is actually fun!

I’ve successfully worked with hundreds of children online, including many who were initially hesitant. We’ll figure out what works best for your child.

What if my child has autism?

I have extensive experience working with children on the autism spectrum and would love to support your child!

For children with autism, speech therapy often focuses on:

  • Functional communication (requesting, protesting, commenting)
  • Social communication skills (turn-taking, greetings, conversation)
  • Understanding and using language
  • Augmentative communication (AAC) if needed
  • Play skills and joint attention

My approach is:

  • Highly individualized to your child’s unique profile
  • Play-based and motivating (using your child’s interests)
  • Family-centered (you’re part of the team)
  • Collaborative (I often work with OTs, behaviorists, teachers)

Virtual therapy can work really well for children with autism because:

  • Less sensory overwhelm (comfortable home environment)
  • Visual supports are easy to share on screen
  • Parents can learn strategies to use all day
  • Consistent schedule without travel stress

I’m comfortable working with children at all levels of the spectrum, from minimally verbal to highly verbal with social communication challenges.

Can you diagnose my child or do I need to see someone else first?

Yes, I can diagnose speech and language disorders and provide a comprehensive assessment.

As a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in Alberta and Ontario, I’m qualified to:

  • Conduct assessments
  • Diagnose speech and language disorders
  • Provide detailed reports
  • Make treatment recommendations
  • Start therapy right away

You don’t need to see anyone else first. Many families come to me directly when they notice concerns, and I can complete a full assessment virtually.

After the assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report that includes:

  • Diagnosis (if applicable)
  • Your child’s strengths and areas of need
  • Specific goals we’ll work on
  • Recommendations for therapy frequency

This report can be shared with your child’s doctor, school, or other professionals if needed. Some families use it to access funding or school supports.

If I find that your child needs services beyond speech therapy (like audiology, occupational therapy, or medical evaluation), I’ll let you know and help connect you with appropriate professionals.

How are your speech therapy services funded? (Insurance & Referral)

Referral: No, I do not require a doctor’s referral for assessment or treatment, though some private insurers may request one.

Extended Benefits: I strongly recommend checking your extended health benefits plan. Many employer programs offer coverage for Speech-Language Pathology services (typically $500-$2000 per year). Virtual therapy is usually covered the same way as in-person therapy.

I provide detailed receipts you can submit to your insurance company. I also offer parent training and home programs to help you continue supporting your child’s communication development after insurance benefits are used up.

How often will my child need therapy?

This depends on your child’s specific needs, goals, and your family’s schedule. Typical frequencies:

Intensive Support:

  • 2x per week (for significant needs or quick progress)
  • Best for: Complex goals, active skill-building phase

Standard Support:

  • 1x per week (most common starting point)
  • Best for: Most articulation, language, fluency goals

Maintenance/Monitoring:

  • Every 2 weeks or monthly
  • Best for: Late-stage therapy, parent coaching focus

We’ll discuss the ideal frequency during your initial assessment and adjust as needed based on:

  • Your child’s progress
  • Your schedule and budget
  • Insurance coverage
  • Family priorities

The beauty of virtual therapy is flexibility! We can adjust frequency up or down as needed without the constraints of clinic scheduling.

How long until I see progress with my child?

Every child is different, but most families notice small improvements within the first 4-6 weeks. You might see your child attempting new sounds, using more words, or showing less frustration when communicating.

For specific timelines:

  • Simple articulation goals (one or two sounds): 3-6 months
  • Language delays: 6-12 months depending on severity
  • Stuttering: Varies widely, but many kids see progress in 3-6 months
  • Complex needs: Ongoing support, with measurable goals every few months

The key is consistency – weekly sessions plus practicing strategies at home really accelerates progress. We’ll set specific, measurable goals during your initial assessment so you’ll know exactly what we’re working toward.

What is speech therapy, and what does it address?

Speech therapy is personalized, evidence-based treatment focused on strengthening a child’s communication skills. I work with children facing challenges in several areas:

  • Articulation (pronouncing speech sounds clearly)
  • Language (understanding and using words, grammar, sentences)
  • Fluency (managing stuttering)
  • Social communication (conversation skills, taking turns)
  • Voice (pitch, volume, quality)
  • Communication related to autism, Down syndrome, or other diagnoses

My goal is to help your child communicate confidently and effectively – whether that means saying their first words, improving speech clarity, building sentences, or developing social language skills. Every child and every plan is unique!

What can my family expect from the therapy process?

Every child is different, but here’s the general approach:

Session Length: Typically 30-45 minutes for younger children, up to 60 minutes for older kids. We’ll decide what’s right for your child during our consultation.

Frequency: Usually once or twice per week to start, though this varies based on your child’s needs and your schedule.

What happens in a session:

  • Warm-up and rapport building
  • Targeted practice using games, activities, or conversation
  • Parent coaching and home practice ideas
  • Progress updates and questions

My approach is:

  • Evidence-based (using techniques proven to work)
  • Play-based (therapy should be fun!)
  • Family-centered (you’re part of the team)
  • Individualized (every child gets a custom plan)

For families across Alberta and Ontario doing virtual sessions, I use interactive games, digital activities, screen sharing, and real-life materials to keep kids engaged. Most children love virtual therapy because they can use their own toys and stay in their comfortable home environment.
